Zebra

A zebra is always one of any zoos' most interesting zoo animals. Zebra belong to the family Equidae, hoofed animals characterized by one toe. Species of zebra include the Grevy’s zebra, the mountain zebra, the extinct quagga zebra, and the plains zebra.

Facts about a zebra

A zebra 's scientific name is Equus burchelli. Average shoulder height: zebra males are 1.35m (4ft 6in). A zebra male weights about 320kg (700lbs). A zebra females weighs about 260kg (570lbs). Gestation period for zebras is 360-390 days.

How long does a zebra live?

The life expectancy of a zebra is 20 years..

Zebra skin

The distinctive stripes of the Burchell's zebra run diagonally and lengthways on the rump and continue on to the belly. On the rump of the Burchell' s zebra,  there are usually chestnut or yellowish "shadow" stripes in the middle of the white stripes. Like human fingerprints and irises, each individual zebra has a unique stripe pattern.

Zebra muzzle

The muzzle is black. A short, stiff mane runs down the back of the neck of the zebra and the tail has a whisk of long black hair on the end.
